Today, people do not have to go into the wild to get their fruit. Market fruits became too expensive for most families to afford, so they turned to the wild pawpaw to fill their fruit needs. The pawpaw fruit, or more commonly known in these parts the “poor man’s banana” got this name during the Great Depression. So, began my quest to hunt for the pawpaw. Especially as to why people of the area had forgotten it. Once I took my first bite of the oblong shaped greenish yellow blotchy fruit that fit in the palm of my hand, I was instantly hooked on its tropical flavor. Now until 2010, I myself had never heard the name pawpaw. Most people today have either forgotten about the pawpaw, believe it to be extinct, or haven’t seen one. The Pawpaw fruit has a story that today’s generations know nothing about and yet a generation past enjoyed them.
